OpenVPN Client Installation Instructions for Windows

You must have administrative privileges to successfully install the OpenVPN client.  By logging in as administrator to perform the installation, you will be able to bypass many of the UAC warnings.

  1. Download the appropriate installer based on your operating system here.
  2. Double click the file you downloaded to begin the installation wizard.  You can click "Next" through the prompts during installation, leaving the default options enabled, and click "Install" when prompted to install the "Win Tap32 Adapter".
  3. Copy all of the files provided to you (.crt Certificate files, .key Key files, and .ovpn configuration files), to the OpenVPN config directory.  If you installed the client using the default settings for the installation path, the config directory is C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config, otherwise, it's the "config" directory under the installation path to OpenVPN you specified.
  4. Open the services management console.  You can access the console from the Start Menu by selecting "Run", typing "services.msc", and selecting "OK".
  5. Scroll down to the "OpenVPN Service", right-click, and select "Properties".
  6. Under the "Log On" tab, select the radio button next to "This Account", and provide the credentials for an account that has administrator privileges locally -- most commonly the local "administrator" account.
  7. Under the "General" tab, change the "Startup Type" to "Automatic", and then click the "Start" button to start the service.
  8. You should now be connected to the VPN Server.
  9. If you are attempting to connect to the Titanium Server, open the remote desktop client and type "" in the computer field.  Click yes through the prompts, enter in your credentials, and you should then be connected.
